It is my firm belief that by harnessing “the unscripted advantage,” we discover that true mastery often lies not in meticulous preparation but in the flexibility to adapt and innovate on the fly. It’s one thing to know your stuff and another to lock yourself into a set way of doing things every time. We usually think being well-prepared means we are at our best, like the A star student who always has the answers. But here’s a different take: sometimes, that rigid preparation can hold us back.

Why Embrace the Unplanned: Finding Strength in Spontaneity

There’s something special about not having everything figured out in advance—it makes life feel more vibrant and real. Think about the times you jumped into something headfirst without feeling totally ready. Maybe it was an opportunity too good to pass up or a moment you simply couldn’t plan for. I’ve seen a lot of smart, talented people let these chances slip by because they thought they weren’t ready or couldn’t do it perfectly. I’ve been close enough to know they had more in them than they realized.

Now, you might think being unprepared sounds a bit unprofessional, but from what I’ve seen, it’s quite the opposite. Acting on the fly shows you have a deep well of skills and instincts you can tap into when you need them. It makes me wonder, are we more ourselves when we don’t have everything scripted out?

Going off-script has taught me invaluable lessons and has deeply enriched my work and personal life. It’s something I’ve even been teaching my sons—be prepared to be unprepared.

And the list goes on…

Don’t be afraid to live fully, in spite of fearing potential mistakes you might make along the way. That is how you learn and grow after all. Let the unscripted lead you to the unexpected so you can reap the rewards of your experience!
