Redefining success requires that we take the meaning of a simple word \u201csuccess\u201d that we have had ingrained in us and change it completely. This isn\u2019t easy to do yet it\u2019s essential if we want to lead truly fulfilling lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s get back to the beginning. Success. It\u2019s a word we hear constantly, yet how often do we stop and ask ourselves what it actually means? For most of our lives, we\u2019re fed the same story: success is something external, something we can quantify\u2014more money, more status, more productivity. But is that really what success is? Or is that just a story we\u2019ve been told, driven by a system that benefits from our constant striving?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There comes a time when we need to pause and reconsider: What if success isn\u2019t something we can measure? What if it\u2019s not about reaching the next goal, or keeping up with someone else\u2019s timeline? What if success, in its truest form, has nothing to do with what the world sees, but everything to do with how we feel?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Illusion of \u201cObjective\u201d Success<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve been conditioned to believe that success is objective, that there are universal markers that define a \u201csuccessful\u201d life. A certain income, a certain job title, a certain social standing. But these ideas are often rooted in a capitalist system that tells us more is always better. The problem is, more is never enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What we call success is often just a reflection of what the system values\u2014productivity, accumulation, and status. But the system doesn\u2019t care about fulfilment, meaning, or happiness. It cares about output. And so, we chase success as it\u2019s presented to us\u2014always striving for the next thing\u2014yet often feel unfulfilled when we get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Redefining Success Means To Envision It Without Comparison<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most toxic aspects of this traditional view of success is comparison. We\u2019re told to measure our success by how we stack up against others and this comparison further twists our perception of what really matters. We then measure ourselves against someone else\u2019s life, using their yardstick, not our own. Competing and jealousy in female friendships<\/a> and work relationships is especially indirectly encouraged and difficult to let go of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We each have different values, desires, and definitions of what it means to live a good life. Comparing yourself to someone else\u2019s version of success pulls you further away from your own truth. The real question is: What does success feel like for you<\/strong>? What brings you peace, joy, or a sense of purpose? It\u2019s time to reclaim that question and stop letting external standards define it for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breaking the Tie Between Success and Capitalism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s hard to talk about success without addressing how deeply it\u2019s tied to capitalism. Under this system, success is often reduced to output\u2014how much we produce, how efficiently we work, how much we can accumulate. But success, as most of us feel it in our bones, isn\u2019t about accumulation. It\u2019s not about owning more things or reaching arbitrary milestones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if we reframed success in a way that isn\u2019t about doing or having more, but about being more connected to ourselves? Success could be the depth of our relationships, the quality of our well-being, or how aligned we feel with our values. Instead of success being something we achieve in the future, what if success is about the moment we\u2019re living right now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Capitalism thrives on the idea that success is always just out of reach, always something you need to keep chasing. But what if true success is about stepping off that treadmill altogether? What if it\u2019s about slowing down, being present, and finding meaning in the things that can\u2019t be bought or sold?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Fluid Definition of Success<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Success is fluid. It evolves as we do. The version of success that made sense to you at 20 might look completely different at 40. And that\u2019s okay. We don\u2019t need to cling to outdated definitions or feel guilty when our idea of success shifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We often think of success as a fixed destination. But what if success is more like a journey, one that\u2019s constantly changing based on who we are and what we need at any given moment? Success can be about thriving in your career one year and focusing on personal healing the next. It can mean pushing forward, or it can mean letting go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Redefining Success and Reclaiming It on Your Own Terms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lastly, redefining success entails that we reclaim it, which requires us to strip away the layers of what we\u2019ve been told it should<\/strong> look like. We have to resist the urge to chase after other people\u2019s goals, other people\u2019s versions of fulfillment. Instead, we need to listen inward, to what feels right for us\u2014whether that\u2019s building something, nurturing something, or simply being content with where we are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Success, ultimately, is about alignment. It\u2019s about feeling connected to the life you\u2019re living, without needing anyone else\u2019s validation. It\u2019s about knowing what matters to you, and letting that guide your path, regardless of how it looks from the outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, the next time you find yourself questioning whether you are \u201csuccessful,\u201d ask yourself this instead: Are you living in a way that feels true to you? Are you in alignment with the things that matter most in your heart?
